Gateway Traditions
Once an Oly, always an Oly!
When Gateway High School was established in 1973, it was already rich with tradition. The school’s mascot and colors were chosen to represent the 1972 Olympics and to respect the lives that were lost — orange, yellow and black, which symbolizes the Olympic flame and our mascot the Olympian. Our tradition of caring for people and the community continues as we host a yearly event “Shop With An Oly”, where we call upon our students to help families in our community to have a wonderful holiday season. We carry on with our traditions by awarding two students who have the most school spirit with the AJ Boik award, an award in memory of AJ Boik, a student that lost his life in the Theatre Shooting of 2012.
One of our most time honored traditions is the Senior Sunrise and Senior Sunset. At the beginning of every year, they meet on the football field early in the morning to watch the sunrise on the first day of their senior year. And at the end of the year, they meet once again to watch the sunset as their senior year comes to an end. Our goal at Gateway is to shape our students academic years and ensure all students come away with memories they will cherish. Once an Oly always an Oly!
