The Social Studies teaching team at Gateway seeks to make all of their classes relevant to the lives of students, striving to bring creative lessons and real-life issues to the classroom.

From studying the human brain and relationships in Psychology, to issues of race, class, and gender in U.S. History, and to matters of knowing your rights in Civics, students at Gateway practice critical thinking and evidence-based communication around issues students find engaging.

Students will start off with our 9th grade academy where students will combine higher level thinking skills with current events and personal relevance.

The social studies department offers the following:

  • Concurrent enrollment starting in 10th grade

  • Honors opportunities/weighted GPA within all classes

  • AP courses

  • Co-taught classes with Exceptional Student Services
