I am passionate about students learning so they can achieve their dreams. I enjoy working in high schools and education in general because education makes a difference to us all. It is the difference between oppression and freedom – Education is that important!
Martin Luther King, Jr, spoke these words, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” We are strong and we are resilient… together! What we do matters so let’s do the right thing together and drive out hate!
My other passion is my family. I have 3 sisters and brothers, 16 + (I lost count but I know all their names when I see them) nieces and nephews from my siblings and my husband’s 8 siblings. My family lives all over the US, Canada, Hong Kong, and the UK. Sometimes they live in other places too but not for a couple of years now. I have 2 children. My 19-year old just graduated with her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Oregon and my 16-year old attends high school in Aurora. My husband grew up in the same house since he was 3 until he went to university. Now, he designs roads (civil engineering tech) for Kiewitt Corporation. We have lived in Colorado for 2 years now. Fandom? Oh, yeah! Go Seahawks! Go Huskies (WA not CT)! Go Ducks! Go Sounders! I am also a huge fan of Peter Sagan and Primoz Roglic and the Manx Missile Mark Cavendish! The list is long… I am also interested in swimming, track, gymnastics, and cycling. I read several hundred books every year. Right now I am reading Chimamanda Adichie’s American and a new mystery.
I have moved 21 times and lived in several locations outside the US. My father joined the US Navy as part of a fast path to citizenship so we moved a lot when I was a kid and now we move following my husband’s work. For people who move a lot, you learn that making connections is more important than what you have. I worked for a large court for some years, taught English as a Second Language, managed ESL programs and taught high school math for 19.5 years and taught one year of middle school. I have learned enough to know that I am a small and insignificant person compared to this amazing world. I have also learned enough to know that our similarities unite us and our differences bring joy and richness to life. I love teaching and working with kids. I knew, as a teacher, that I will never, ever be bored because the students make the job so interesting.
I am new but in my last high school, I was the Key Club Advisor since starting the club 9 or 10 years ago until I moved to Colorado. My club members served thousands of community service hours every year and were beacons in our community!
